I'd have totally taken a swig of Bininger's Banana Juice back in the day.

Score!
I picked up a box of stuff at an antique store today for 10 bucks and change and it had a bunch of somebody's family photos, slides, negatives, and home movies in it. I'll be scanning the photos and slides later.
It also had that cool looking slide viewer thingy that you see on the left in the photo and that's a camera case to the right of the viewer thingy, alas it was camera-less. I dig the reels and little itty bitty silver film cans.
Here's a preview of the pictures and slides that I'll be scanning:

Spotted while shopping
I love this old board game, you know it's an antique because it has two white players on the cover and the word 'swish' displayed prominently on it, but I didn't love it enough to buy it:
I have an inordinate fondness for fake food and yet I purchased none.
I almost bought this plate with zombie Ike and Mamie on it, but since I am not a Reichpublican I hung on to my money.
However I did purchase an issue of National Geographic from 1946 and it's chock full of crazy ads and cool old photos which will be showing up here, on Flickr, and on Monkeyscan.

Oh the things you'll see!
When the Mega Millions lotto gets up around $100 million I make the drive over to Bristol, VA and pick up some tickets. Today after buying a couple of tickets for the next three draws I went into one of the many antique stores in downtown Bristol. I didn't buy anything but since the place was so big I did snap a few pictures of some of the stuff that caught my eye.
When regular bacon isn't enough for you, get yourself some candy bacon! It looks almost life like and it's got a keen "BACON VIEWING WINDOW" just to give it that more realistic look. You can bet Uncle Oinkster is happy that he's not in that package.
They had a few lurid gossip mags at the antique store as well. Oh how I loved the cover, it's got Commies doing lobotomies, Oral Roberts, and a gal in a bikini. The British bad girl they refer to on the cover is Joan Collins. This magazine was from the mid to late 1950's and judging by the pictures of her they used in the article she was at least 40 back then. She was on the last series of Footballers Wives on BBC, so you can imagine how old she is by now.

I don't think Ms. DeMos ever had a tan in her life.
I found a treasure trove of these old style scientific sex mags from the '70's. I almost bought this one but I decided against it because it was mostly articles. I'm sorry to say I did not check this to see if the middle article was for or against blackmailing the homosexual. And I didn't see what the answer to the timeless question "Should You Marry Your Cousin?" was. I figured since I have never married any of mine then I didn't need to know.
Despite the urge to snap all three of these magazines up I settled for just taking photos of the covers.
Side boob but no butt crack.
But it wasn't all bacon, babes, and side boob, I did spot some Quaker propaganda.
I'm betting Blue Gal or Suzy planted it there to lure unsuspecting and impressionable kids to Quakerism. Those insidious Quaker vixens will stop at nothing in their attempt for world Quaker domination. Oh well, I suppose it could be worse, we all could fall prey to the unholy siren song of the Mennonites.

Out and about
We'd planned earlier in the week to get all cultural on our own asses this weekend and go see some art exhibits at ETSU but when the sun came out here yesterday we forgot all about that and we took off in the Sparky mobile. We ended up in Greeneville, TN, which as some of you may know is the gateway to Moshiem, Mohawk, and Bulls Gap (birthplace of Hee Haw alum Archie Campbell). Greeneville is the birthplace of former President Andrew Johnson.
I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Greeneville. It's a scruffy, poorly laid out, and mostly ugly city here in east TN. The only nice part of it is the downtown area, and that's where we ended up. We spent the afternoon in a few different antique stores. We spotted some horny monkeys
and I finally found out how my blogger buddy Bossy became a millionaire:
As usual in the antique stores around here there were bins full of old albums. Here are a few of my favorites. Once again I ask you, how many people are in a quartet?
Nope. Try again.
Close, but no cigar. Aww, screw it, I give up. You gospel singers never learn.
I picked up a few postcards that feature Johnson City in the 1970's and a couple of you will be getting them soon. I also bought a Look magazine from 1967 that had Vanessa Redgrave on the cover.
Grr baby, she was quite the smokin' hottie back then wasn't she. I've scanned all the photo's and ads I liked out of it and recycled the rest. While the copy of Look and the postcards were nice, my major find of the day was 5 copies of Mademoiselle from 1961 for $4.
They had been in the collection of a local college but somehow they found their way to this antique store and ultimately into my hot little simian hands. As you can imagine they are chock full of pictures of crazy fashions, wild ads, and other pop culture stuff. I'll be scanning stuff from them soon and I'll be posting some on this blog and some on Monkey-Scan, so keep your eyes peeled. So, what did you kids get up to this weekend?
