Since you made a major issue about John Kerry's time in the service in the 2004 election,
people are sure as hell going to make an issue out of Bush McCain's service.
This notion that Democrats, liberals, and progressives can't say anything about Bush McCain's military record is nonsense. Despite what the corporate media and right wing talk show hosts would have you believe our nation's military is not populated with Republicans only. Many Democrats, liberals, and progressives have served and continue to serve.
The media flacks love to scream that only Republicans, most of whom did not serve in the military, take a look at all the Neo-Cons for example, can criticize someone's military service. Letting people who never served in the military be the only ones who can criticize those who do makes about as much sense as taking marriage advice from a Roman Catholic Priest who has never been married.
The other thing about all this is the media said that Gen Clark "Swiftboated" Bush McCain. That's bullshit. Swiftboating, as it has become known, is the act of tkaing someone's military record of out context, distorting it, and telling out right lies about it so that you smear your political opponents. What Gen. Clark said was not out of context, a lie or a distortion. He simply spoke the truth and he did so from his unique position of being a former General in the Army and a Democratic Party big wig. And that boy and girls, freaked out the media. They're used to letting draft dodging chickenhawks like Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Ted Nugent be the only ones who are allowed to comment on someone's service, they're obviously not used to people who actually served commenting.

If anything, I'm a democrat/liberal, but have to admit that the McCain experience was simply awe-inspiring. It sure doesn't make the soon to be former pres look all that good.

I respect McCain's service and won't say anything bad about his time as a pow.
Having said that I do think the question of the assumption that this somehow prepared him to be POTUS is fair.
Great post, Monkey--the MSM's licking of McSame's ass has gotten completely out of hand. But then these are the same media idiots who didn't question the fact that Bush was a coward in Jr. air force, Cheney bought his way out of service altogether, and yet Kerry, the only one who actually did time in Vietnam, was criticized and lied about.
I am stunned on a daily basis at the media bias toward McCain. They'd go ahead and declare his victory today if they could.
I think what Wesley Clark said was correct and needed to be said-(and I commend him on his bravery in saying it and not backing down) that McCain's being shot down as a fighter pilot did not automatically make him a good Presidential candidate. He did not say -as the righty media said(isn't that all of the media?!) that Obama had any or more military service-just that McCain should not be able to rest on the laurels of being shot down/being a POW. How does McCain's Vietnam history make him more qualified? If anything-this situation makes the diplomatic approach that would probably be used by Obama more desirable. It is as a you said a truthful, examination of McCain's history.
I tried to post a comment earlier but the computer or blogger ate it or something. So what I tried to say was this:
The hypocrisy of the MSM is shameless. How can they berate Kerry one year and praise McCain the next? But they do and do it repeatedly. Are the people in this country so dumbed down that they don't see this for what it is? But of course these thoughts are never articulated in the MSM so maybe these thoughts do not occur to people so thanks for getting this out there.
As much as I dislike McCain, I gotta say. I would totally fuck the Younger Years McCain.
