I'm not angry

I find it laughable that when certain people find out I am an atheist they immediately tell me I am "angry." What is it about not believing in the same things they do that makes me angry and them not?

I'm not the one who's trying to convince others of how right I am all the time. In fact, it's quite the opposite, I could care less if you believe in all that mumbo jumbo. I just want to be left alone when it comes to religion. I've read all about it, even the other religions most Christians know nothing about, and it's all bunk to me. I've been to church, to bible camp, to revivals, to backwoods shouting churches, to mainstream churches in cities, hell, I even went to a conservative college that was funded mostly by right wing Christians, and you know what I learned from all that? I learned that for me it's all a sham. I learned that religions may be good for some but they are not for me at all. I learned that most all religions are a way for a few people to control a great number of people.

And I learned that religions, especially the Christian ones, get you coming and going. See, they tell poor people that if they work hard and give what little they have to the church then they'll get great rewards in heaven after they die. And then they tell rich people that if they give a bunch of their money to the church they can continue to live as they please and that they too will get big rewards in heaven after they die. So who exactly comes out ahead in all that? Why it's the church of course.

Now of course I understand that there are sincere people in the world who live their faith and who actually are better people because they believe and I respect those people. I respect and admire people like Fran, Rev. John, Ed and Susie, Blue Gal, Ubermilf, and others who don't shove religion at people but who instead try to lead by example. On the other hand I despise sanctimonious people who use religion as a weapon against others, people like Jerry Fallwell, mAnn Coulter, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and others.

It's people those in that last group and the sheep who follow them who say I am angry because I don't blindly believe like they do. I wonder if they think that the millions of Hindus are angry as well because they aren't Christians like Falwell and his ilk are, and Sikhs too, are they angry as well? Buddhists too? Zoroastrians? Is everybody who doesn't accept Jesus angry? Also, what about the Jews? The New Testament says that only those who accept Jesus are going to be saved and go to heaven when they die, but didn't the Jews have a deal with God prior to Jesus coming down here? Are the Jews going to hell with all the rest of us who don't accept Jesus?

I'm not a holier than thou authority on all things religious so I don't know. But I do know that I don't want anyone leaving Bible verses on my blog and I want to be given the same respect you think you should have. Stop trying to convert me and stop pushing your religions on me. I don't want them and I don't need them.

But some of you will say, "My religion demands I try to save your soul! It my right to make you think and act like I do! You're infringing on my right to practice my faith by refusing to allow me to convert you!" To that I say, my lack of religion is protected by the Constitution so leave me the hell alone. You have the right to spout anything you like but I have the right to ignore you and to tell others to do the same.

In the end I'm not angry because I don't know about Jesus and all the stories about him, I'm just a bit peeved because some of you sanctimonious Christians won't leave me and mine the hell alone. I don't want to go to church with you, I don't want to hear about how Jesus made your trailer trash life bearable, I don't want your Jack Chick tract, I don't want your Watchtower magazine, I don't want to grow a beard and become an Amish farmer, I don't want to read a Bible verse on a jar of jam or at the bottom of a pie tin, I don't want to give any money to quack faith healers, I don't want your book of Mormon, I don't want to hear about how space aliens came to earth to screw with us, I don't want to make any Palestinians move from their houses so I can have their land, I don't want to live in a theocracy be it one run by Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Baptists, or followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I just want to live my life in peace with out any religious interference. And when I die I don't want any religious service for me whatsoever, in fact I don't want any funeral home service of any kind after I get cremated in the cheapest way possible. I want people who knew me to get together and to have a drink while they swap stories about what an ass or great guy I was. And then later I want my ashes spread over water somewhere. Is that so hard for some of you Christians to understand?

I totally want your Jack Chick tract. Those things are hilarious.

Those people are just doing what the preacher told them to do, because they live in mortal terror of the god they love, the one who loves them so much he's liable to send them to burning hell and damnation if they don't do his bidding... NOW.

I came over to give you a big hug and tell you I'm so glad your medical problems aren't as bad as feared. So that warm feeling you have right now around your shoulders are the results of my arms wrapped around you.

Okay, now I have read this post and I have to say, you must have tapped into my head when you wrote it because I feel EXACTLY the same way. Even down to what to do after I die.

Amen, brother! (so to speak)

I used to want to be burned, now I'm thinking just dump my dead, deceased corpse in a hole so I can be all composty for the flora.

As for your right preaching, Rev. Monkey, Amen.

Thanks for saying nice things about me here - as you know, I don't collect saved souls as a means to my own salvation.

I won't quote any bible verses here, but I will refer to one loosely and it has to do with the plank in one's own eye. My path is to heal from within - I sure won't be telling you or anyone else what to do.

Anyway I respect that you have a mind, excellent critical thinking skills, ample experience with your own life and as a result you can choose your own path. Peace to you upon it is all that I will say.

As for the God I do believe in- She is pretty capable and if She wants to bring someone into the fold it won't be because I have been a sanctimonious asshole.

Frankly I have had to stumble and continue to stumble my way on my path - and I don't want anyone telling me what to do or how to do it. So why would I ever do that to another, I ask?

It is that simple.

What makes me sad is that there is an overabundance of "well-intended" people who are certain that they are helping. Sadly it makes the rest of us who go about our Christian lives differently seem like tokens. We are not. The others are just louder and way more pedantic. Sorry.

Anyway, I actually came over here to share some LOVE.

Peace out my monkey!!

But won't your not believing in God interfere with worshiping me as a God?

Cause you know deep down you want to.

You know Fran and I are spiritually linked, so I won't repeat.

I would like to add that I think all flavors of fundamentalism, even non-religious (i.e. political or jingoistic), are the root of the problem.

Also, I think you should have your head shrunk and put in a pickle jar when you die.

Synthaetica said...

and ironically, these same types tell each other than none of them deserves "God's Grace", so what the problem is with us presumable going straight to Hell without all the tap-dancing around it, i don't get. it's much more efficient this way, after all.

i'm sorry if i offend, but religion is inherently delusional. until even our most beloved religious types accept that, i, like the good Dr. von Monkerstein here, will continue to walk away while that particular monkey is repeatedly spanked over and over again.

Fran and Ubermilf said what I would have said. Peace Dr. M!

PoP said what I would've said. Perhaps we can all have a group funeral, so all the cool people will be there? They can burn us on a pile of wood a la Darth Vader, and then they can just have some drinks and reminisce.

Or the head in the pickle jar thing. Whatevah.

I find that so many Christians come from a place of fear. I often think that we atheists are the only people who don't prosetyl... convert people.

I have made arrangements for my body to be donated to the medical school for dissection and then be cremated.

Fran said...

Ubermilf and I speak in a unified voice on this one. With CDP at our side.

It is overbearing fundamentalism that is the real problem with any side.

Let each person live according to their conscience.

And leave everybody else the f*ck alone.

The New Testament says that only those who accept Jesus are going to be saved and go to heaven when they die, but didn't the Jews have a deal with God prior to Jesus coming down here?

I've thought about this too. Also at the time of his demise, Joshua Ben Joseph was still Jewish, yes? He had no idea about a church after him.

I think when the Rapture finally does come, a whole lot of people are going to be VERRY disappointed.

Well, Monkey, it was just reported in the local Elizabethton Star newspaper (I kid you not) that I hold hands "atheists and the devil."

Since you are the only atheist I hold hands with I want to know who caught us.

I also want to say that I only held hands with the devil once, so don't get jealous.

I must say, I have no patience for any faith that says, regardless of how one lives one's life, one has to believe a certain thing or suffer eternal damnation. That just seems petty to me, and I have no interest in any god/goddess that is petty. In one of his books, Terry Pratchett or one of his characters said something like this (I'm paraphrasing from memory, so I'm sure I'm not getting it quite right, but here's the basic idea):

The only people who go to hell when they die are people that believe it is where they deserve to go. Therefore if you don't believe that hell exists, you won't go there. The only people that believe hell exists are followers of certain religions, which is why it is important to kill missionaries on sight.

That might be just a wee bit extreme, and I don't think Mr. Pratchett was really advocating killing missionaries, but I found it to be an interesting concept. He certainly has a recurring theme regarding religions in general, and you get the feeling he doesn't have much use for them. If you haven't read his stuff, you might really like it.

Lulu-You can have it.

Blueberry-You are so right girl.

PoP-Thanks for the hug hon, I appreciate it.

Barb-Oh the irony.

Randal-Unfortunately they won't let your corpse be put in the ground unless it's full of bad chemicals. Burning is the way to go.

MnMom-Yes it is, too bad some won't let others do that.

Fran-If more Christians were like you then you all wouldn't have a bad name.

Mwb-I worship you as a demi god.

Ubermilf-I agree fundies are a huge part of the problem.

Commander-I often think that religion is an agreed upon mass psychosis.

CDP-Back at ya girl.

Dguzman-Hells yeah, Viking funerals all around!

Crayons-You are so right about them being afraid of the god they made.

Duros-The Rapture will never happen because it's all part of a fairy tale known as the Bible.

John-I admit it, I snitched. That other minister was torturing me. He "Jesus boarded" me.

Grace-I deleted your comment because you obviously don't get it. I was talking about people like you in this post. You were still trying to convert me with your comment. I've never been "burned" by religion, I just outgrew it. It's a sick fucking metaphor that I don't need anymore. You are so clueless, holier than thou, and smug in your religious dream world that you can't accept that others simply do not believe as you do and we never will, no matter how many times you keep telling us you think that the shit in the Bible is true.

Ed-Thanks for your comment sir. I will be checking out Prachett's books once more now that I have read so many good things about them by people I respect.

really, people should just lay off you already. we all have the right to believe what we want and even though i may not believe the way you do, and you may not believe the way i do should anybody really care?? people should just be grateful we have the ability to believe in whatever we want without getting killed if we believe differently.

please remind these monkey hasslers if you will, that we are able to live in america because people fled religious persecution.

Hey Monkey-did you ever get to check out that little doc. film I sent the link for? About the "doomsday" cult here in NM? Perfect example of a maniac taking control over people for his sick desires.
