this story has filled me with simmering rage since it broke. actually, the whole mlk-harbor issue has been showing up on the news here in la for quite a while, and it's really, really, really upsetting how many people have died needlessly. gr.
If the pictures are the woman who died are current, I can't help but think that one of the reasons she was ignored was because she was morbidly obese.
Not to start another rant, but there's an insidious "safe" discrimination against fat people. I can imagine those nurses thinking that someon who already is a ticking time bomb of possible health issues doesnt' require immediate attention. You know kind of like, if that's the best she can do to take care of herself, then why should we hurry and help?
You hear those kinds of comments all the time. Fat people are lazy and they're fat because they're lazy, have bad eating habits, etc. Some of that is true, but there are thyroid issues, heredity, conditions that make it impossible for people to exercise....
It's simplistic, I know, but it happens. Watch people's reaction when a fat person walks down the airplane aisle during boarding.
Kelsi- Let me just add your comment "Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr".
D Cup- You are so correct. My late father was huge fat guy. Most of my early memories of him were him responding to the taunts of the other kids in the projects about how fat he was. I have a little extra baggage on me as well and I get looks and comments about it. In my opinion she had two strikes against her, her weight and her ethnic heritage.
I don't know what makes me more fucking pissed off, the staff at the hospital, or the lack of initiative at the hands of the 911 DP. Since I don't know what the protocol is out there I can't give examples on what they could/should have done. Total fucking bullshit. I hope they sue their lil skinnin asses off. Oh ya, my thoughts and prayers to out to the family, she had what three kids? Oh wonderful, now they too can grow up with out their mother.

I always worry that a fat person will tip the plane on its side, at people don't mind falling over cuz they may webble but they don't fall down.
The god news is this hospital has 23 days to fix things, i'm sure they will get it done!
