Design brilliance
I found these two books in a thrift store yesterday. They were book of the month club editions, most likely from the early 1970's. I was blown away by the illustrations on the covers. I've seen the PBS/BBC mini series they made from these books but I've never read them. If I can stop marveling over the brilliance of the spare clean illustrations I may try to read them.

Robots and aliens by Tibor Gergely
A bit of whimsy from the late Hungarian born illustrator who emigrated to this country in 1939, where he no doubt dropped an anchor baby or two while entertaining millions of children with his great work in many many books.

So long Frank
Illustrator extraordinaire Frank Frazetta passed away yesterday. I've loved his art since the first time I saw it. And since I'm a sci fi and comic book nerd, I've seen quite a lot of it. This piece of his pretty much sums up everything I love about the man's work:
What's not to love? Rocket ships, space men, crash landing, outer space, and a hot alien babe with wings. Boom. I'm all in.
Rest in peace Frank. And thanks for all the great images you gave us all those years.

A feast for the eyes
I love the blog called things magazine. It's a blog that has links to a lot of other blogs that feature kick ass eye popping pictures. Through it I found this blog which featured all these great pieces of modern art and graphic design:

And just a few minutes ago I found on things magazine the link to this blog which featured posts that highlighted the artists who did this great work:

I'm crushing hard on both those blogs and on things magazine.
If you love great illustration and great graphic design, then check out those blogs and keep your eye on things magazine.

I'm all about giving back
I just put up a bunch of classic clip art
and some illustrations by James Thurber
and Edward Gorey
on one of my Picassa Web albums. You can access it by clicking here. Feel free to use any of the illustrations or clip art in whatever you want to use them in, no need to give me any creidt when you do either. In fact that goes for all the stuff I post on Picassa and Flickr, except for my personal family photos, most of which are now on Facebook only.
