You may not have been there, but unfortunately for me I was

We saw this last night
and I could not believe how much I hated it. There was so much great buzz surrounding this film that I was looking forward to seeing it. And then as it played out in front of me I wanted to slap the shit out of Todd Haynes for writing and directing it and I wanted to kneecap the studio exec who gave this turkey the green light.

This movie is interminably long and incredibly pretentious. I was begging for the end credits to roll and I nearly cried with happiness when they finally did. All the actors have done and or will do better work elsewhere and Todd Haynes is capable of better, and he's capable of worse too because he did after all make another film, Velvet Goldmine, that got good press but which I hated. Maybe I missed something, maybe I'm too stupid to get the symbolism, or maybe I just hated this movie. Yeah that's it. I just hated this flick.

In other movie news Edmonton's own Captain Karen won the latest Name That Film contest! However since I just sent her a vintage postcard with a zen proverb on it, she is not eligible to get another one so soon. So what I did was I found the address of a woman who has the same name as Captain Karen in a state that borders Canada and I sent her the vintage postcard with a zen proverb on it.

And here's this week's film still in the ongoing Name That Film contest:

Send your entries to monkeymuckATgmailDOTcom and you could win a prize! Entries accepted until I decide to stop taking them. In the event of a tie I will select one person at random to be this week's winner. This offer is not valid in some Baltic countries and one or two islands off the coast of Greece.

Cate Blanchett as Dylan makes me stop in my tracks - how could THAT be enjoyable? or believable? or interesting? The clips are annoying enough.

Cate Blanchett, my aching arse. I wailed about the whole concept when it was first presented. The whole premise was just so lame.

Was it worse than Eraserhead? That one made me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

As a lifelong Dylan fan, I was ready to be disappointed. I've got to say, as much as it surprises me to disagree with Mnmom and the good Dr. Monkerstein, I loved the movie. Post to follow.

But I agree with Barbara-- I hated Eraserhead. Okay, and everything else David Lynch has done. I don't think he's as deep or interesting as he or his fans think he is.

Great. Now I don't know WHO to believe.

I try to like David Lynch, I really do. We just tried to watch Inland Empire the other night. Couldn't do it.
Every Lynch movie since Elephant Man has left me going, What the hell is going on?

Dr.
Oh my. Thanks for that review. Dylan is my second favorite musician. Johny Cash is my first. I saw the "No Direction Home" film, which I loved. I was going to rent your reviewed film, but you spared me. Thanks.
