The late Pop Culture Friday

This past week's pop culture question for the panel on The Onion AV Club blog was:

What celebrity do you think would make a good best friend?

After thinking about it for a few days I'd have to go with
Bill Murray.

We're roughly the same age, okay, he's a little bit older than me but that wouldn't matter. We're both funny so we'd crack a shitload of jokes and make fun of all the people and things who need to be made fun of. We could hang out and drink beer or go hit the links since we both play golf. I'd also introduce him to disc golf. He's into baseball big time so we could watch games together and since he's wealthy he could spring for us to go to a major league game every so often, heck even it meant watching his favorite team, the perennial chokers and also rans, the Chicago Cubs, I'd be willing to go and not complain too much. Yeah, I'd definitely pick Bill Murray.

This week's paraphrased pop culture question on The Onion AV Club blog is:

What movie do you keep quoting lines from even if no one gets the reference but you?

Hands down, no contest, for me it's Repo Man.

It's chock full of great quotable lines like:

"John Wayne was a fag."

"Day, night, it don't mean shit."

"Someone says plate, then someone says shrimp...then someone says plate of shrimp."

I used to quote lines from Pulp Fiction but after it became the approved hipster thing to do, I quit it. Although sometimes I'll let a "Bacon tastes guud. Pork Chops taste guud," slip from my tounge. And "Zed's dead baby, Zed's dead."

Stripes and Caddyshack are also a couple of my go to movies to quote from. "Chicks dig me because I rarely wear underwear," is nothing short of classic. One of the proudest moments of my pop culture life came to me on an overcast day on the golf course a few years ago. I was playing with an older dude who I am sure had never seen Caddyshack and when it started to sprinkle he said, "I guess I better go on in." I looked at him and I said that memorable line first uttered by Bil Murray as Groundskeeper Carl, "Oh, I'd keep playin', the heavy stuff isn't gonna come down till later." He looked at me like I was an idiot and he went in out of the rain. As I finished playing the front nine by myself, I could not help but chuckle at my quotings.

Pop Culture Friday

This week's Onion AV Club pop culture question is:

Which artist gets a lifetime pass from you, whatever else he/she may do?

I almost went with Terry Gilliam because he made Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen and so many other great and wildly inventive films but he also made that piece of shit Tideland which I can never forgive him for because I hated it so much, but in the end I chose Bill Murray.

He's been in some of my all time favorite movies such as Lost in Translation, Stripes, Groundhog Day, Wild Things, and Broken Flowers. He was comedy gold when he was a cast member of Saturday Night Live (some of his hosting jobs sucked balls though). And some of his appearances on Letterman have been a hoot. Yes, he's made some missteps in my opinion, What About Bob? sucked (yes, it sucked mainly because I can't stand Richard Dreyfus but it still sucked nonetheless), Razor's Edge really really really sucked, and he slagged Roanoke, VA, a great city I lived in for about a year and a half, one night on Letterman, but he gets a pass from me on those incidences because of all the great work he's done.

Now, tell me, who gets a lifetime pass no matter what they do from you?
