I urge you all to calm down

Sparky darling, I've got to get back to Monkey Central to do a post about this "bounce" Bush McCain is enjoying.

But I want to look at more houses!

We will, I promise! But you've got to let me get back so I can write a post telling all those jittery progressives and shaky Democrats to calm down. Okay but you better make it quick mister.

Don't I always?

Do you really want me to answer that?

Uhhhhh, no. Listen every body, calm down and don't lose heart, every candidate gets an upward bounce in the polls after their convention, hell even Jimmy Carter got one in 1980 and so did Bush Sr. in 1992. The thing you all need to remember is that McCain's upward bounce brings him into a statistical tie with Obama. So really, that's a pretty small sorry ass bounce. Obama is no John Kerry or Michael Dukakis, he's smart enough and savvy enough to stay on message and to keep pounding home the message on the issues that matter to you and me, health care, ending the war, and energy independence. Don't forget that 85 percent of the people in this country hate Bush and as long as they keep tying Bush McCain to Bush Cheney then they'll keep inching back up in the polls. And just you wait for the debates between Obama and Bush McCain, Obama will make him look foolish and I'll bet you a dollar to a doughnut that Bush McCain will get so mad and flustered that he'll make a huge gaffe and he'll call Obama the "N" word or something.

I've been following politics since 1972 and I've seen all this post convention hype come and go. We all need to stay focused, keep plugging Obama on and off our blogs, and keep on the attack against Bush McCain Palin. We can do this, we can take our country back.

I'm one of those who freaked out. It wasn't a proud moment. I actually thought that they would lose points because I watched some of that convention, and confidentially, I thought the whole affair was an embarrassment. I wanted a crater, not a bounce. But you're right. Things will settle back to where they were--Obama plus four--real soon. As long as he stays out of tanks, we'll be okay.

I have been getting freaked out too, but then a friend of mine reminded me of something important. We don't really have national elections in this country. We have state-by-state elections with the Electoral College with the winner in each state taking all the electors. And so these polls are really worthless.

It doesn't matter if the nationwide polls show them 50-50 even on Election Day. If you look at each state, there are really only less than 10 states that are "in play" and they are the traditional ones - PA, MI, FL, etc. Pretty much all the others are locked up with a clear winner. Because the electoral college is so important, there are websites that are devoted to tracking the trends in the electoral college. My favorite is http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ In fact, as of yesterday, 538 is projecting a fairly sizable Obama victory - 292 to 245 electoral votes. The winner, of course, needs 270. That lets me sleep a little better at night.

I am really hoping for some reasonable commentary on the "Drill, Baby, Drill!" chant that went up on the RNC. Talk about shameful. The Republican party has no dignity, no platform other than shame.

Just as Princess Sparkle Pony says "I keep track of Condoleezza's haircut, so you don't have to", I'll keep track of the electoral college numbers so you don't have to.

The Sunday numbers. Published every Sunday until the election.

And remember, Sarah Palin is so "in the news" right now because most of America is thinking "WTF??"

Snad, I heard Obama himself address that ridiculous "Drill, baby, drill" issue just this morning on NPR--"They're hollerin' 'Drill, baby, drill'--what kinda slogan is that!?" The disgust in his voice was palpable.

Thanks for the calmer, Monkey. Every once in a while we all need a triple gin & tonic to calm our nerves during these scary times; you're my gin & tonic.

Item one: what happened to the cute house with the sun porch and the French doors and stuff?

Item two: I went to a county fair this past weekend. There were a lot of people there who Palin is designed to attract.

I saw an "Impeach Bush" bumper sticker, an "End the Endless War in Iraq" sticker, a stroller bedecked with "Obama/Biden" bumper pins, and people were lined up at the DeKalb County Democrat's booth (and none at the Republican counterpart.)

I'm hoping that isn't just an Illinois anomaly.

Another thing to do is ignore mainstream media. They want it close. They need their horserace to sell more soap. Don't let them get you down.

Thanks for cheering us up, Dr. Monkey!

I know who I'm voting for.

Ubermilf-That house did not pass the inspection. It had three big cracks in the foundation and it had other problems as well.

I wanna start a pool as to when in the debates McNovocain loses his shit. I got 15 minutes into debate #2.

Just got my bumper stickers in that say "I'm voting for the guy who knows how many homes he owns."

All well and good, but what are you going to do about all those pods in the basement?

Good work. Everyone just needs to take a deep breath. We still have a loooong way to go.

I really hope so too! I think a big big part of McPow's little bounce is the so-called liberal media drooling all over Palin.
