I may be a left wing progressive liberal but I'm not an ass

If you really think that life under a Democrat President is going to be much different than it is now, then I hate to burst your bubble. The next President, if he or she is from the Democratic party, may have more respect for the Constitution and for other branches of government but they will not be much different than what we've got now. Sure, they'll be a little more transparent and they'll hold a few more press conferences but by and large what we've got now is about what we're gonna get later.

And the reason is that the Democrats and the Republicans both suckle at the teat of lobbyists and major multi national corporations because as someone once said, money is the mother's milk of politics. Through the years the Democratic party has shifted right and are now about where the Republicans were in the mid to late 1960's. The Republicans on the other hand, to differentiate themselves from the Democrats and to please their new Reich wing religious base, have moved further right. But all members of both political parties still need money to buy those ads to get themselves reelected, they still need money to pay for those yard signs, they still need money to pay for those endless campaigns, and who provides all that money? Multinational corporations like Wal-Mart, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Smith Kline Beecham, Ford Motor Company, Exxon Mobil, and the list goes on.

The people in power in Washington DC have shown time after time that they will do whatever it takes to get reelected. They'll take money from most anyone to keep themselves in power. And why shouldn't they? They make a good salary at what they do, they get their ego's stroked and they get idolized by a certain amount of people, and they get all kinds of benefits. And then, if by some miracle an incumbent loses, he or she can turn around and go to work for a lobbying firm.

I vote Democratic in my local and state races, though I never voted for the Republican in Democrat clothing Governor we have in our state now. I usually vote Democrat in national elections as well. But just because I vote that way does not mean I support all the things the Democrats of today stand for. I vote Democrat because I can't stomach voting Republican and I can't vote against my pocketbook and against my ideals. Since there is no socialist/labor party in this country, I am forced to vote Democrat and I hold my nose while I do so.

So, I just outed myself as a socialist. That's socialist with a small "s." I'm not a National Socialist, National Socialists are the Nazis and the Nazis were right wing fascists/corporatists. I'm not a Socialist, Socialists are better known as Communists and I'm not a Communist. I'm a socialist and a socialist believes in some free enterprise but they also believe that the government should be operating some businesses and industries for the common good of all. I believe the government should own and operate all the utilities, especially electricity and water, and they should own and operate all facets of health care. Contrary to the propaganda we get in this country about socialism, the socialist form of government works fine and it is the dominant form of government in Europe. Countries like Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, Britain are all socialist countries of one degree or another and they do just fine. They all still have robust private enterprise yet the government still owns and operates some of the essential industries. I'll bet that if you asked people living in those countries if they wanted to go back to private health care they'd say, "Hell no." Socialist forms of government just make more sense to me and they seem more equitable than what we've got in the USA now.

Years ago the Democratic party was nearly a socialist party but they veered off to the right in order to stay in power and now they have become multinational corporation money loving whores. Are all Democrats money grubbing whores? No. Are all Republicans Reich wing Jesus lovers who hate it when two dudes kiss? No. But by and large elected officials of both parties will do whatever it takes to stay in power, anything from going against what the core of their party stands for and wants, case in point the top ranking Democrats who were briefed on water boarding years ago and who did nothing to stop it then, to taking money from big pharmaceutical firms while they write legislation that benefits big pharma.

Am I being a cynical old fart? Probably, but I've lived long enough to see certain patterns emerge and fade and reemerge. I've seen the political cycles and after a while they all start to look the same. So, how do we break out of this rut? How do we break the grip of the multinational corporations on our government? Well, it's going to take something along the lines of another Great Depression. It's going to take another huge financial crisis that shakes us up like the Depression did. Only when people finally wake up and see that they're slaves to their credit card debt and to Starbucks and Wal-Mart and that their elected representatives aid and abet all the corporate shenanigans will we ever be ready to change our system.

Having said all that, I still believe in working for social and economic justice and that maybe, just maybe, we can convince enough of our fellow countrymen that the path we're on now is not the correct one. Myabe we can change things without a huge economic melt down, I'm hopeful but I'm not going to hold my breath.

dr m -- that was great
you and i are kindred souls in many ways

i would vote socialist with a small s all the way (although in europe some socialist parties or liberal parties are really conservative and some are communists). not only are the dems just 1970s reps and the reps closer to 1930s national socialist -- -the govt they so dearly cling to power keeps getting the rules changed (subtlely) to keep them in power

it is all just set up now to keep the money and power where it is and well -- fuck the other 280,000,000 souls --- feed them bullshit, fear and god and they fall right into line -- works every time.

americans are lazy --- especially in the brain --- if we really thought about where we were heading we would do something about it --- but we dont --- we would rather hear about britney then what nancy is doing about torture. we want to be taken care of without being told we are being taken care of. we are rome 476. the fall is near and inevitable. you are so right -- it will take a great despression like 1932 america to wake us up.

Well, according to some to track our financial situation in this country we may be dangerously close to a financial disaster.

If the next pres. is a dem. I have to believe some things will get better. I can't imagine them getting any worse.

My dearest Monkey,

You have hit the nail on the head. You have also illustrated why I cringe when I hear high school students moan, "History is boring."

We are re-living the past right now. People will wail and gnash their teeth and some body who gives a damn will come along with some helpful ideas to make life bearable for the 98 percent of us in a tailspin.

Then, the economy will magically improve (it must be magic -- the only cures for economic problems are helping the rich, right?) and we will again prosper. Then, the cycle will begin again unless we learn from our mistakes.

What's the chance of that happening?

Yeah, that post about covers it for me.

Just as their was an environmental "blog action" day a while back, I'd think people would be well-served by a "healthcare" blog action day.

It's an issue that perhaps is not quite on the grand scale that the environmental crisis we may be sliding into, but it affects people in a very immediate way on a daily basis.

It would also be interesting to get a perspective from bloggers in countries with socialized medicine as well. I'd love to get a sense of socialized healthcare in these countries, including good and bad aspects.

Okay, sorry for co-opting your blog. Maybe I'll post the suggestion on me blog as well.

Cynics are just those who realize what's going on better than the rest of the idiots.

I'd take 8 years of the Republican Bill Clinton over 8 years of the messianic cokehead, but they're indeed both corporates. One is just more evil than the other.

Great fucking post.

Dr.

Well said. I have lived in three countries now where there are more political parties than you can count on two hands. Political discussion is so much more engaging. Choices seem more real.

Living in the USA means having the right to chose between Coke and Pepsi. (I don't drink either because they are both just expensive sugar water with bubbles.)

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. I'm all there. Unfortunately, most Americans aren't, but hey, Top Model's on and American Idol's going to be here next month. We only have a tiny window to reach anyone, but they'll all be out fighting the terrorists by shopping.

What's harder than a cynic? I think I'm finally there.

Day-um, Dr. Monkey--you really DO need to become president. Everything you said is right ON, brother. What blows my mind is that so many people DON'T think like this, like you and me and DCap and everybody. How can you live in this country and NOT understand how fucked up everything has become!? Like D-Cap says, they're just too lazy to pay attention, I guess.

I too predict that it will take a complete meltdown of our system, and most likely a return to pre-corporate days, much like the Splotchy story virus that's going around, actually. And it will be scary. But, much like an addict who's completely strung out on booze or drugs, until this country hits rock bottom, nothing will change.

Sigh.

Outstanding post, Dr.!

I'm right there with you, buddy, hopeful, but not holding my breath.

Very well stated, Dr. I'm with you on the socialism with a small "s." Most people don't even realize that we already have some elements of socialism in our society, and they work just fine. Certainly better than if they were "privatized" (or corporatized, the term Ralph Nader [okay, I admit I like the evil Ralph. Please don't hurt me!] says is a more accurate description.) What will it take to get people to band together to act in their own interests? Here in Wisconsin, there has been a recent, as yet unresolved scandal regarding cable television and the Big Ten Network. State officials are being inundated with calls, letters and emails from irate citizens who are unable to see Badger games - more than they've ever received regarding any other issue. But health care? The war? The lying criminals in the White House? Corporate takeover of the government? Apparently not as important as the inalienable right to watch the Badgers on television. Sigh...

I agree with you too. I do have to take a little issue with this comment:

"I'm not a Socialist, Socialists are better known as Communists and I'm not a Communist."

My mom and dad were members of the Socialist Party for all their adult lives; I think they always voted for the Socialist presidential candidate as well as the Socialists in local elections. My stepfather was also a Socialist. Milwaukee mayor Frank Zeidler was a family friend, as well as Chicago artist Carlos Cortez, and other lesser-knowns. There is still a very active Socialist Party in Wisconsin; they hold a monthly potluck here in Madison and regularly field candidates in Milwaukee elections. It isn't the obnoxious people that hawk the newspaper at peace rallies -- that's the Socialist WORKERS' Party, nor is it the same as the Communist Party. I just had to set that particular record straight.

That said, good on you for declaring your socialism, with a big or a little s.

Exactly. I'm a big ole progressive (liberal in 20th Century language), and I'm continually amazed by folks who think it will be hugely different under Dems.

You just have to have had lived long enough to remember that while it is better than under the Repubs of the past couple of decades - it was by no means a people powered glorious socialist utopia.

Remember the "major" Dem candidates are against gay marriage, universal health care, etc.

And they are every bit as connected to the same set of corporate donors.

Well said, Dr. M.!

We would, indeed, be better off under a more socialist government, and I don't care who knows that I think that!
