More Thoughts On The Blogswarm Against Theocracy

For once being early paid off. My first post to the Blog Against Theocracy got up on the BAT blog, but now it looks like others are having troubles, of one sort or another. And I wanted to toss my two cents in on those troubles.

One person, Infidel753, has raised a few hackles with the content and tone of his posts. It seems that some did not take kindly to Infidel753's views on religion in general and many have taken exception with the fact the Infidel753 is a rather zealous atheist. People are getting pissed because Infidel753 is attacking something they hold so dear. Samurai Frog has come to his defense and so shall I.

Many many people are pissed off that someone like Infidel753 even exists. And for him to speak out about his beliefs and to attack religion is the cherry on top of the sundae of their indignation. They say that by attacking their faith that he is attacking them personally, that of course is nonsense. I am smart enough to know that if someone disagrees with one or two or even all of my beliefs, then they are not attacking me personally. Using the logic that says that to attack someones religion is to attack them personally would mean that if you had a different religion than someone else then you are attacking them by not believing the same thing they do. That's nonsense and rational sane people know it.

Sure some atheists are more rabid than others, just like some of your Jeebus followers are more rabid than others. And some Jews are more rabid than others, and some Muslims are more rabid than others.

For the record I have been a Roman Catholic and a United Methodist. I went to a small conservative religious four year liberal arts college where we had to take 12 hours of classes in bible and religion and all the professors in the other classes were required to weave in Jeebus lessons in their classes as well. So it's not like I do not know what your bible says. I do. I know more about it than most followers of Jeebus do. I am quite aware of what Roman Catholics and mainstream Methodists, and since I live in the buckle of the bible belt, what some far right evangelical sects of christianity believe. I've been to all three of those types of churches. And you know what? I have matured enough, thought about it enough, and yes Dorothy, I have evolved enough to know that that shit is not for me. None of it. I reject all stone age religions. I do not need their metaphors in my life. And I reject all religion in general, I do not need it, and I think it is dangerous.

The bible says that if I am not with Jeebus then I am against him. Okay, I can live with that. I have no problem being against this guy
and this guy

although I am in no way against his hat!

But since I am against all religions and their ever more insidious worming into our lives and government, then I regret to say that I am also against this guy even though among all the major religions he seems to me to be the one leader who walks the walk and who is the living embodiment of his religion.

And I too am against this religion, although it's one of the best out there in my opinion.

One of my frequent commenter's left a comment within her main comment that summarises the way you Jeebus people think about us atheists, she said, and I paraphrase, that we would all be such good friends if we could only get together on "this pesky religion issue." I know she meant it as a joke, and she's probably going to be pissed at me now, but it offended me. See, you Jeebus people, and the same is true of your Muslim cousins and others, will never leave us alone. To you people "getting together" on the issue of religion means to you that I accept your faith, whatever kind it may be, and that we will never truly be equals until I do. I am somehow less than you because I do not swallow your beliefs hook line and sinker.

I am perfectly willing to let you be and to look at you and to treat you as my equal, just as you should be with me and my lack of faith in whatever your faith is. I'm not out knocking on doors trying to convert you, so I expect the same thing from you. Your faith is all around me and it's hard for me to escape or get my voice heard on these matters so how about you Jeebus people let voices be heard that disagree with yours and stop trying to stifle anyone who disagrees with you.

And now lets end on a funny note: Years ago when I lived in Knoxville, TN I was at home one afternoon and two middle aged bible toting women came to my door. They knocked and when I opened the door they asked me, "If you died today do you know where you would spend eternity?" Without missing a beat I said, "Hell yes, I'll be spending it in Nutley, New Jersey." They were not amused, I closed the door in their faces anyway.

Seperation of church and state is not only the American way, it's the only sane way we can all get along and move forward.

Evil Spock hates zealots, no matter who they are.

Unless of course you're pimping for Evil Spock. Evil Spock posted with no problemos on BAT.

Reasoned post, Dr. M. I agree with you about everything except the Dalai Lama. I mean, considering he lived in opulent splendor and only had to embrace poverty when the Red Chinese kicked him out of his country, then embraced spirituality because it sold well, and is now a guy who wants to go back to Tibet so he can have his slaves back. But that's me, I can find a reason not to like anyone.

Man, I really am a crank, aren't I?

You've summed it up nicely. It's the absolute certitude about anything that worries me.

It doesn't leave any room for "getting together."

(I don't mean to suggest that your frequent commenter displays absolute certitude. I'm talkig the Pat Robertson type certitude)

What a well written and brilliant post you have here Dr.

As one of your (how i flatter myself) favorite Jebus followers(and Monkey followers too!) I am appalled by the road we are on.

So much for freedom, freedom is dead.
Democracy- not so much any more.

This is all so deeply disturbing and sad.

I get to choose to be Catholic, I get to chose to be progressive, I get to choose to use foul language and for the moment I still get to choose what I do with my body.

You get to choose your path and that is cool with me. And this whole BAT thing seems insane and not at all about free choice.

I don't want to live in nutty Christian-land with these hateful people running the show anymore. I can't take it and I want to leave.

This is the saddest 4th of July I have ever seen.

Evil Spock-So you're intolerant of intolerance?

Phydeaux-Thanks.

Samurai-We're all entitled to our own opinions. And who cares if you're a crank? We need some cranks after all, just to keep the rest of us honest.

D Cup-Thanks for your kind words, I loved your BAT post as well.

Fran-See ya later. A I have said before, I;m staying to fight to get my country back.

GreenSF-Sorry sugar, I didn't mean to give you flashbacks. Go have some bacon and breathe deeply.

Dr M - I agree with every single word of your post.

My cousin used to live with me and my folks until she became a born-again Christian and suddenly didn't wish to mix with sinners...

The only cult leader I would follow would be you (or perhaps Evil Spock).

What can I say? I am just too tired, but tomorrow I will wake up with this idiotic holiday over.

My general level crankiness will return to its rightful spot and I too will probably stay and if I stay I fight too.

Plus that and I don't have any money to go anywhere.

And I do love a good fight.

It does? Maybe I am missing something. That does sound like many modern religious leaders, but that doesn't sound like Jesus to me. Which part are you quoting?

ROFLMAO!!

Too tired to comment on the rest except to say RIGHT ON monkey brother!

PJ-Thanks. Follow me at your peril though.

Doc-Someone piss in your Wheaties? Or is it just me that you're pissed at. I know that it says what I paraphrased in my post. I'm not sure where in the new testament but it does say words to that effect. I'm sorry you seem to have taken umbrage with everyhting I have posted today, perhaps you need to relax and chill out.

Pam-Thanks girl.

Dr. Zaius said...

Hey, don't take it out on my Wheaties! I was just wondering if missed something. I just didn't remember that part. I thought Jesus said things like "judge not that ye be not judged," and all that stuff. I think that the "with us or against us" bit might be hard to pin on the Jesus-meister.

My apologies, but I am not really taking umbrage at anything you have said. Jeepers, I have said nothing that was meant to be mean-spirited. I just said what I thought. Please don't get mad!

The written word can seem terse and does not always convey the actual spirit of message very well - so I'll add one of these - :o)

Hey, Dr. von Monkerstein, thanks for giving a hoot. I'm glad there are some people who can see what was going on there.

I said this at Mr. Frog's site too, but I think it needs emphasizing: Disbelieving in an idea (such as a religion) is pretty much identical in practice to considering it nonsense. We all disbelieve in the existence of unicorns, and few people would hesitate to describe the belief that unicorns do exist as nonsense.

Demanding that we stop expressing the belief that religion is false, nonsensical, or whatever term one prefers, is the same in practice as demanding that we shut up about being atheists. That's what concerns me.

It amazes me that so many religious people believe that atheists want to convert them to atheism. I don't want to convert anyone to atheism. Atheism sucks.

Now, European Socialism, on the other hand, is something I want to talk to you people and monkeys about. I'm starting a blogswarm of my own called Blog Toward European Socialism... Any takers? Eh? Come on, you'll love it. There will be punch and pie. Ah, screw it. Just impeach Bush and we'll call it even.

Good work, MVM, at not succumbing to the soft censorship represented by the idea that 'it's impolite to talk about religion in public.' Considering that religious people, and not just fundies, have portrayed atheists as being on the bottom tread of the stairway to hell, I think they have abrogated any right to righteous indignation when they are criticized in much milder terms. They have as much credibility on that count as the Muslims who rioted over Danish cartoon depictions of Mohammed - but were silent when the Taliban blew up centuries-old statues of Buddha in Afghanistan.

Nice post. In my experience, most non-religious folks merely want to be left alone. They didn't start this conflict. I also get annoyed at the "fundamentalist atheist" argument. There may be a few folks out there who that could apply to, but it's pretty inaccurate on the whole. Non-belief is not equivalent to religious belief, and very few non-believers can be accurately accused of proselytizing in the style of theocrats. Some respect for sincerely religious folks who aren't obnoxious ain't a bad thing. However, when it comes to the theocrats of the authoritarian religious right, the same people screaming about being persecuted are the aggressors.
