Since they weren't like us, i.e. white and filled with the Protestant work ethic, then they were lazy and savage. And since they didn't want to work when it was the hottest part of the day, their colonizing overlords had to have an overseer to make sure they worked hard to produce goods for white folks.

That is sickening. What's ironic is the English plantation owner just stood there while the "natives of Africa" did all the work. Great Protestant work ethic.
