A movie you used to love but now hate.
I used to love war movies when I was a kid and I used to love this one. I'd watch it every time it came on TV and I get so worked up about those dirty Commies in Vietnam that I'd be in a propaganda lather by the time it was over. Then the war dragged on forever and it was apparent that we'd been lied to by LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and especially by that war criminal Henry Kissinger. And I grew to hate this movie. I also hate John Wayne in this movie. I'll go so far as to say I hate him in everything but True Grit and The Shootist. Let's face it, he was awful He was more wooden that a forest of giant redwoods.
I still like some war movies, the ones that show us that war is stupid, futile, and hell. I don't care for the ones that glorify war or mass killing.

I hated this movie when I was a kid, if only for the reason that my dad insisted on watching it every time it was on t.v. Plus, let's not forget that Jim Hutton is responsible for populating the earth with that sad sack son of his, Timothy Hutton
Oh my god, I never made the connection Kirby. I freakin' hate Timothy Hutton.
I hated this film when it came out & hate it today. I was in the USArmy fearing orders to Vietnam. This film is a piece of dogsh.t.
I can't agree with you on John Wayne. His politics aside, he was in some fine films. The Long Voyage Home, Stagecoach, They Were Expendable (this is one of the most underrated films ever) and the some other John Ford films She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache and The Searchers.
This is a terrible movie.
