Best Mike Leigh film ever. Sally Hawkins is luminous and cute as a button in this sweet slice of life movie. Eddie Marsan is creepily great as well. Highly recommended.
Eddie Marsan was the driving instructor? Greatest psycho/stalker/anal bullying teacher ever! From the beginning he seemed "off," I began to suspect how much when he went lathering on and on crazy-eyed about her "seductive boots". As for Hawkins, she was so likable and vulnerable that I've still not recovered from that scary scene with the insane homeless man...
I didn't know what to make of this flick, kept expecting the big Leigh twist of the knife. Wasn't sure whether he was depicting happiness or modern-day deluded happiness. I guess it was the former (I heard him interviewed) Still not sure that got through to me entirely. But I liked the film. Love the micro review too
GT-In the DVD extras Leigh says the film is about happiness and love. So he wasn't being ironic or twisted. Sometimes things are as they seem. Even Mike Leigh can see happiness and love sometimes.
