You won't catch me forgiving this racist asswipe. He spent most all of his productive years spreading hate and violence against black folks and now that he's about to die he wants forgiveness? Fuck that, I'm not black but I'll never forgive him for doing what he did. He's a fucking old fraud who's conscience finally got to him.
If there is a hell I hope he rots there forever, along with all other racist pricks.

Funny, I was just about to do a post about redemption and commend this man for his attempts late in his life to achieve it.
And considering how many people there are in this world whose conscience never "gets to them", he sets a positive example that even the worst among us can change for the better.
I have to question his motives. This theory that he has to atone "to get into heaven" sets me off. I honestly don't see where he is deserving of any respect from me. In reading the article, he essentially is asking for forgiveness, one act at a time. I'm with you.
Forgive him and commend him all you like Bubs, but for me, his acts of contrition smack of him doing what he can to try to escape his racist and hurtful past. He's afraid he'll die and go to hell so now he's turned into someone who he never was when he was young, healthy, and productive.
Like Bubs, I'll forgive him. I may not commend him, but I'll forgive. If that makes me a sucker, so be it. The people I admire most were big promoters of forgiveness.
The great thing about the heaven that most churches teach about is that you can be an asshole all your life, and right at the end, you can just say "Oops. Sorry, all you folks. Never mind", and you're in. Very convenient.
Whether I commend, condemn, forgive, or forget this guy is beside the point. If he really wanted to atone, as he says, and make amends for what he's done, he would haul his sickly butt into the nearest juvie center and spend the rest of his days working with kids who are now on the path he set himself on. He'd prevent a lot more sorrow by preventing more hate.
Oh come now Monkey Man, be Christ-like.... ;)
God has forgiven him... why can't we??
(Frankly, the whole thing would serve, in it's entirity, as a great email chain letter-- if we all gave $1 and passed it 'long, we could send him right to Heabben!!)
It's all about him not wanting to go to hell, not about, as Snad said, wanting to work in the trenches to make things better.
Let Jesus forgive him, I don't.
Good for you, Dr. Monkey! I wholeheartedly agree with every single word you wrote. I almost wish I believed in heaven and hell, so I could hope that he would get to the gates of heaven and be confronted with a big sign that said "Blacks Only!" Then black St. Peter would smash the "racist asswipe" in the face and kick him down into hell, where he belongs.
The only deathbed ( or near-death) repentences that would hold any weight with me would be if the repentent one were an Atheist.
What a sad waste of a life. Hopefully his story will get people to NOT fall into the sa,e trap of hating others, be them black, white, gay, straight, women, etc.
i agree that he is just doing it because he thinks it will get him into heaven. what about that paragraph where he's thinking about cancelling a visit to a black church because he has to think of his safety? he's a liar and a racist and deserves to go to hell. god or no god, it sounds like he'll never truly understand what he did wrong. racist asswipe is the perfect description.
good for you.too me he ranks in the same group as gingrich who has just converted and become catholic and says his sins are wiped clean.
hummm, just in time for his push to become the next president. this old man in the story just wants to go to heaven.
Why is it that he didn't do his time here on earth for what are obviously crimes? My grandfather killed a man drinking and driving and just gort a ticket. There is no justice, but in the legacy of my fucked up family's (that's been ravished by alcoholism) loathing him.
