It's alive!

I finally got my lazy blogging ass in gear and put a post on the film festival blog, so yeah the bastard is up and running. Go check it out, bookmark it, and why not make plans to come visit me at the film festival this year? It's November 14, 15, and 16 and if you start saving right this second you might be able to afford the gas it'll take you to drive here.

I'm curating the Socially Conscious Films series this year. If any of you know of any documentaries that are an hour or less that are available on DVD that are in a social justice vein let me know in the comment section, I'd be very grateful for any help you may have to offer since I'm on the prowl for more films to screen.

Dr. M - hey, I found a list movies you might want to look into. It includes "At the River I Stand" so it may be a good resource for you.

Have you seen "The Letter"? about a small town in Maine and the reaction to a new group of Somali immigrants coming to town? I think it is more than an hour though.

Oh, how about "Wellstone!": http://shop.1asecure.com/prod.cfm?ProdID=183527&StID=3291

Oh, it is 90min.

Sex Ed and the State maybe, but is that social justice? Or health care?

Can you tell I am a brainstormer?

Oh I loved this film:

Whole

It is about people who know they should be amputees the same way transgendered people know that they are the wrong gender.

The people are trying to get their "disorder" classified in the DSM-VI and they want doctors to believe them and help them safely lose the limbs they feel do not belong on their body.

http://www.whole-documentary.com/thefilm.php

It is 55min long.

I suppose it could be social justice (human rights) or health.

SPOILER:

Actually, they recently did win their battle and will be in the DSM-VI

Hi, there. One resource you might check is Teaching for Change. They sell a lot of dvd's about social justice issues for use in the classroom, but in all instances they tell you where else the ordinary Joe can get them too.

I checked the times on these and they are all between 75 and 95 mins, so they might not qualify, but still worth seeing.

Yes Men (80 mins)
Corporate bullshit and sticking it to them in some weird and funny ways.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379593/

The real dirt on Farmer John (82 mins)
Farming, one man's transition, survival and acceptance moving from traditional to organic/co-op in a rural area.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439774/

Before the Music Dies (95 mins)
Artists, clear channel bullshit, corporate music, real music, etc.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0760307/

The Unforeseen (88 mins)
Ugly development, growth where it shouldn't go, evil money-grubbing bastards, liberals, conservatives, mother nature.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0912596/

Iraq For Sale: the War Profiteers (75 mins)
Blackwater, Halliburton, and more. Nuff said.

This is awesome you are doing this. Looks like you have some more to add to your list but if I think of any, I'll let you know.

The Real Dirt On Farmer John was great. I know some people who hung out on his farm in its wild heyday. Wonder if he is experiencing flooding right now? I haven't heard much about Illinois.
