Our Good Seasons salad dressing cruet finally gave up the ghost a week or so ago, it had been leaking for a few months and every time Sparky or I shook it up to mix the oil and vinegar together some would spill out on our hands, the counter, or the floor. Luckily we had a back up cruet that I had bought a few years ago to keep flavored oils in.
Being the genius I am I decided to decode the salad dressing recipe using the old cruet before I tossed it in the recycling bin. So one day last week I cracked the code. I measured out in tablespoons the amounts of each liquid needed by pouring in tablespoons of water in the old cruet. I figured out quickly that it took 1/4 cup of vinegar, two or three tablespoons of water, and one half cup of oil. I was pretty pleased with myself for figuring it all out so quickly. So to celebrate, and because we needed more salad dressing mixed up for supper later that night, I decided to use my new found knowledge of the recipe to mix up some dressing.
I reached in the cabinet and I got out a packet of salad dressing and I looked closely at it. And there on the packet it told you how much of each thing to put in when you mixed up a packet of dressing. I looked at the box the packet of dressing was in and it too had the ratio of ingredients clearly marked on it. I was a bit less pleased with myself after I found out that all I had to do was to read the packet and or the box to find out how much of each ingredient to put in if I didn't have a Good Seasons cruet to work with.
However, I consoled myself by remembering that my genius truly knows no bounds.

All that work and bless your heart the info was right there on the package. But hey, you took the right approach before you knew where to find the answer, so you get extra credit for that.
Don't you get one of those bottles for free when you buy two or three of the packets of dry mix? Go for a new one, you earned it.
Like my Mom always says "When all else fails, read the directions".
Do this:
1/4 cup evoo
2-3 T. balsamic vinegar
one heaping T. pesto
Shake it up yum!
*snicker snicker*
I do something very similar to Mnmomm, only I don't add pesto, I just add a clove of garlic and perhaps a tsp of whatever herb I fancy at the time.
That was perfectly male on your part, Monkey! I'm sure I would have done the same thing if I'd only had a penis at the time! ;-)
The only mistake you made was not applying for a research grant before you did your experiments!
That was easily worth a couple hundred grand.
Those bastards at the dressing factory were just trying to mock your efforts. Fuck 'em.
Give a man some vinagrette, feed him for a day. Teach a man how to make vinagrette, feed him for a lifetime.
The best salad dressing is Hershey's Chocolate Syrup. There is no muss nor fuss - You can use it straight from the bottle!
