Another sign the apocalypse is upon us

Here's the Leningrad Cowboys and the Soviet Army Choir doing an incredible version of Sweet Home Alabama. Those dead Lynrd Skynrd guys are rolling in their graves as they listen to those Commies sing their old racist song.

(Fez tip to Boing Boing.)

The Leningrad Cowboys are actually Finnish, although the Soviet Army Choir is not. Finland's economic system is one of the freest markets in the world, so they're not really commies, even though the LCs pretend to be. And I guess the Soviet Army Choir was at one time.

Regardless, I think the dead Lynyrd Skynyrd guys would still be rolling over in they're graves. Awesome video!

If you haven't seen it, check out the film The Leningrad Cowboys Go America. It rocks.

Believe it or not, I grew up listening to the Red Army Chorus. I've still got several albums. My parents would host parties, have a few too many and crank up the old Ruskies. Great video, what a hoot.

Anyone heard of the Red Elvises? They too are tres awesome...minus the pompadours...

And thanks Dr. M.

Dr MvM, I don't want to rain on your parade, but Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't mean for that song to be racist. I think they'd actually love the cover.

Sweet Home Alabama's lyrics are "In Birmingham they love the governer boo, boo, boo. Now we all did what we could do"

The great Saint Wikipedia says that they were using the song to criticize Neil Young for lumping all southerners in one pot. They were trying to say there were good southern guys trying to solve the problems too.

As for why they loved them the confederate flag so much, I don't know. So did the original Dukes of Hazzard and that didn't stop Willie Nelson from being in that stinkpot of a movie.

Anyway, I'll go on not liking Lynyrd Skynyrd for providing the drunken redneck asshole anthem "Free Bird".

I prefer this version 100 to 1 over the original stinker, which I hate even more now that KFC is using it in their commercials.

I love the Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Red Star Chorus. I even have a couple of Russion Chorus CDs!

A couple of the Cowboys were also in another of my favorite movies (my copy of which Monkey's vcr tried to eat, but I don't hold it against him really I don't no honestly it's over let's just try to enjoy this blog): Jim Jarmusch's Night On Earth, in the very last segment. They inspired a term my hubby and I use to this day to describe a certain stage of drunkeness - a "Helsinki Cab Ride". Ah, culture!

Hey Dr. Monkey!
I've got some music from the Leningrad Cowboys that sounds pretty cool. I first heard of them when an Austrian friend sent me some music a few years ago, he saw a concert in Germany and loved the irreverence and live show.
It was fun to find them here! :D

I guess I'm the only one who couldn't take it. I'm no Skynyrd fan either.

As long as those Leningrad Cowboys don't start doing Ramones songs I'm fine.
