Question of the day

Today's question comes to us from my running mate Kristi Love. Miss Thang wants to know: If you played hockey, what position would you play and for what team?

Well Kristi, I did play hockey a few times when I was a young lad in Detroit. I could not skate worth a damn so they put me in goal and I kind of liked it. So I'd have to stick with playing in goal if I played today. I'd like the adreniline rush that a goalie gets when play moves down the ice towards him. But on a practial level I know that most of the game is played away from the nets so I would not have to be skating around a lot and I would not be involved in all the play all the time. Yeah, I admit it, I'm lazy.

As for who I'd play for if I played, I'm assuming you want to know which pro team I'd want to play for. Well then, yes, I'd have to go with the team of my youth, the Detroit Red Wings. I grew up watching guys like Gordie Howe and this guy:
Andy Brown, the last NHL goalie to not wear a mask. I thought it was cool he didn't wear a mask and I loved seeing photo's of him from games, he'd always be screaming or making a freaky looking face when the other team was shooting at him. I admired him for being the last hold out on the mask issue but deep down I knew he was an idiot for not wearing one.

My second choice for a team to play for would be the Ice Monkeys. But since I'm a male they wouldn't let me play for them. Oh well, life's a bitch sometimes. Thanks for that great question Kristi!

I love sports, but only as a spectator. I was one of those girly girls who couldn't throw more than about 5 feet. And when we played the dreaded softball in gym class I would stand in the outfield praying that it would never come my way. I can swing a mean bat, but don't ask me to run the bases. You could throw a balloon and it would get there before I do.

I love me some hockey, but you had to be a lunatic of the first rank to be a goalie back then.

Would you run out and pick up all the Calmari that they throw on the ice?

Thanks for this important info, Doc. I thought it was Gump Worsley who was the last not to wear a mask, but looking it up on interweb, your guy Andy Brown is the last. On the other hand, Andy Brown played 63 games in his entire career, while Worsley played for over 20 years without one, though he put a mask on for the last six games of his career, when he was in the net for the Minnesota North Stars.

So let me be the first (and last) to say this.

Andy Brown was a real man and Gump Worsley was a pussy.

Goalie - I knew it! You can play goalie for the Ice Monkeys any time, as long as you don't mind going down a lot and getting scored on by a bunch of women often.

GKL--expect Monkey to show up at your next practice.

You're one tough Monkey, playing goalie without a mask!
