National Bird Night 1971

National Bird Night 1971
(Acrylic ink, and paper on 20x24" canvas)

This work refers to phony rightwing Republican/conservative patriotism. If you dared criticize Nixon or the raging Vietnam war they lied us into, they shrieked that if you don't love America you should leave. They wrapped themselves in the flag, that doesn't mean shit to me and many people of color who got screwed over by our government.

The bird is a nod to the Pop art of the period, especially Roy Lichtenstein and his Ben-Day dot works.
